For the Love of Money

Money and Love – an invocation/prayer

Please note: the following is my attempt to transcribe and make sense of the notes I took at the “For the Love of Money” Worship in Oakland, California on October 8th at the Humanist Hall.  Some of it may not make much much sense, or  there may be fleeting bits of wisdom within the prose below.  I do not expect it to read like a narrative or ‘normal’ blog rather, it is infused with poetry, knowledge and tidbits of information that I am still attempting to digest. Please feel free to ask questions or chime in with your thoughts on the struggle of power concerning love and money. Thanks for reading.

The PRAYER: to live in a world without fear, with love, of the possibility of each moment coming with dignity; being able to say “this is what I need and this is what I have to offer.”

The exchange. Three teachers. Charles Eisenstein, Gigi Coyle and Orland Bishop, at the Humanist Hall.

The intention was to rethink our relationship with money and love, especially concerning how the two are related- and how they should be treated.  And how can we support each other in the relatively-uncharted waters of what to do with money and love?

Today, we are seeding a change in the system.

Money (and power) enter into our love story rather early in life.

When people say, “let’s be realistic,” they usually mean let’s talk about the money. If only we had enough money…

Money and love have both evolved becoming a planetary force.

Who needs my love and money? There is never enough of either in this alchemical transition.

Money so often is thought to dictate what is practical and what is realistic. Money also establishes reality by the kinds of behavior it encourages.  There always seems to be more debt than there is actual money.

We are all in competition for not enough money and in that reality a certain aspect of our nature arises where everyone is self-interested and focused on what they can get, everyone else be damned.

For some time, money and love have been perceived to be in direct opposition to one another, as if to say there is no money in our love arenas, and vice versa – It is a financial compromise and, arguably, one that leads to a sort of suicide of our souls.  We are taught that we have to let go of what we love in order to make money. That we must choose money over being able to do the work our hearts guide us to do.

Money was constructed to be an oppressing force, but the agreements can change, and that is what the purpose of this workshop class was – to dig deeper into the agreements we made years ago, and to discuss how we can evolve those constructs.

Collective trauma is the glue that holds together the structures that keep us apart.

Money and Love can share a common angle: they are both something you can give to others.

Feeding or taking care of someone is often an act of love, a gift.

Money is allowed to be a system of bringing together these gifts and needs.
LONGING is a force that drives our gifts and needs.

We long for the freedom to be generous!!

Love and money originated in the gift – the opening of the self, giving of the self, and an extension of one’s self. Perhaps they originated in the same place, and perhaps the wounds of love and money originated in the same place: when relationships became controlling and subject to domination, and we began to see the world as property, we now see each other as property. Corruption evolved.

Patriarchy is the ownership and objectification of women.  The same happens in reverse in Matriarchy, and men become objects.  You can substitute the genders for each other.  This is a class war going back to the beginning of time.

Before we had money there was barter, and certainly possessions.

“Love existed long before money. Power, too. Barter was the dominating mode before we regarded a hunk of gold as worth exchanging for food, or sex, but love entered into barter, also: When you had to trade skills for skills the negotiation was more intimate – you learned what you had that the other didn’t, and vice versa, and could groom how the
price played into pleasure or penury – and you’d do it for love – but not money!

Love may predate the notion of money entirely. But yes, the wounds of love and money may share a common origin: Fear.  And we are still living in those cultivated evils every day. Points to consider:

Money and our sex lives are our most private matters, not to be discussed.

It’s not a measure of good health to be well adjusted to an unstable world.

Debt is a connection to a specific person or entity. It may stretch your boundaries unlawfully.

Gratitude = natural debt.  It need not be repaid.

We need a return to transparency – for the healing of love and money.

We need to address our fears.

Determining what is good and what is sacred in our lives can often depend on what we fear.  When we avoid our own fear we limit the imagination, inspiration, and intuitive direction of our spiritual guidance that tells us which doors to go through so we can learn what is on the other side.

FEAR = Chemistry. There is a stage in life when we lean in to fear as children. We desire to be in touch with the unknown. We engage in impulses of uncertainty. Needs awaken us. Fear is the gap we strive to transcend. Once we enter into it we have to pull in something new that isn’t given by inheritance. Knowing this feeling requires some measure of trust. Our age helps us transcend that gap.  Our wisdom.

Fear is harmful to powers of creativity beyond the field of our inheritance. By bringing fears into awareness new things become possible. Discussing our fear of money (and love) is the way to change those fears. To transmute them.

Fear might be cultural but the response is human. Fear can override the system:

We spend so much energy on fear that could be spent on love! We focus on the fear of not having freedom, or money or time. The fear of being alone. The fear of pain. The fear of not being successful. The fear of walking down your own path or not walking your own path.

Sacrifice is the longing for the why:  Why do we fear? Why do we love? Why do we need money?  What do we need love so bad?

So we were asked the question: what part of our civilization has to die because it’s locked in an old paradigm?

Materialistic views of the world are dying. The idea that we are separate is dying.

We must let go of what is dying, of what we fear.

Money is loves shadow.

Sanctify means to give meaning

Sacred reciprocity has many forms, and money is only one.

Be in the longing.

To be in longing is a source of belonging.

Trusting doesn’t mean not acting.

The problem is separation. The answer? Connection.

Value exchange binds a community.

Love is the worlds most natural currency.

We can make things and concepts more useful and real by creating a context. For example: a chair can be a table, too. Here, we are allowing things to return to their consciousness. What has died can be restored. A thing is dying if we cannot speak to its spirit. We must remember primal intuition of what it means to put meaning into language.

What do we want to say to money?

What you can do is help your community allow money to flow in a healing direction. Have a vision, then invite money to support that vision. Do an experiment: Offer your work without any expectations for what it is worth and allow your ‘customer’ to determine value. See how the values flow. Allow your store/shop one day to be ‘suggested’ donation and see how much more money you can make when you allow the wealth to come to you without force.  While these concepts are superfluous and a bit of a stretch for some, for others, it is precisely the kind of trust and transparent communication we have been seeking for years.

IMG_6495

This is a call to tribal wisdom: how do we come back to relating to each other so that we can take care of the flow of money and love.

Time doesn’t go by us – it goes through us when the time is right.

The lands don’t belong to us we belong to the land.

Treat money and love with upmost respect. #InGodWeTrust

All in in all, the workshop for me personally was a nice reminder that even the cold and sterile can be sacred and injected with holy energy.  We do not have to keep repeating the same mistakes over and over, rather we can address those mistakes, look at them head on, look at what we’ve learned from them and then persist onward in the direction of our dreams.  I am focusing on not letting money be the barrier holding me back in my life, rather allowing it to be the energy field that carries me forward only when in need.  I have often set up paying my bills in work trade and accepting other forms of payment in the ways of food and services instead of cash.  I encourage you to be open to this new paradigm of money and love and how they are connected at a root level.

Mountain Earth

I study the mountains
like I study the curve of a woman

Like the way I stare deep into your eyes
looking to lift the disguise from your gaze

Like how we listen to old stories the
the mountains tell it…

Every rock and groove a lifetime of moves and slip.

Each hill a gift to the present.

Every dry river bed has a past documenting the history of lifetimes,
and oh, how I’ve missed you.

I wish I could tell you

I wish I could tell you

How many times I’ve had

trouble remembering to breath

the act of forgetting can make one go insane.

I wish I could explain how frequency ripple

and how important it is to admit the truth nothing but the truth.

All the stories I’ve heard

From the holy book of gods word

All the fables and nursery rhymes I used to know

That one song on the radio

I wish I could remember.

All the details of WWI

It was important and our grandfathers fought for our sons

But I can’t seem to recall the details when asked in question

I wish I could tell you. Which herbs go with which ache.

Every misfortune I’ve made. I’ve come to terms with my mistakes

But there’s too many to name …

I wish I could relay

All the golden nuggets of wisdom

In Judaism teach you a few dirty Yiddish words or how kiddish works.

I thought I would never forget

what it’s like to be a kid

but the sheen has worn off and I’m already rusted soft and done did.

Maybe someday I’ll

be able to convey

what it feels like to know everything

in some way, at the same time

not remember anything at this rate.

When the lights are on but no ones home

Always waiting for a moment that will never come again.

All we can do is pray

Trust the universe is unfolding as it should

We are in motion

And nothing can stop this orbit

Might as well hold on and try to enjoy the ride

While we keep remembering…

Why we are here in the first place.

Standing with Standing Rock

We all know the sorrow and chaos that is coming forth from the situation at Standing Rock, and if you aren’t  aware, you may have some research to do.  The injustice that is taking place over sacred land and sacred water in North Dakota, during this sacred ‘holiday’ season is NOT acceptable.  As a human race, it is our duty to make sure that our voices are heard loud and clear, with respect and peaceful determination.

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time of families coming together to express gratitude.  What terrible irony that the very land the water protectors stand on was taken from the Native Americans many years ago, who are uniting to fight so nobly for the devastating Standing Rock Pipeline situation.  Haven’t we learned our lesson, America?  We once stood for freedom… I’d like to think that core is still engrained.

As a peaceful artist, activist, and woman, I recognize this is a huge opportunity, for those on both sides of this ‘fight’ to learn, grow, evolve, and become stronger as a tribe.  I only wish I had gotten involved sooner.  At first, I thought it didn’t apply to me. Now I realize, as more and more videos surface, that NOW IS THE TIME to stand up and look injustice in the face, any face.  The hardest part, is that we may have to show some grace, even in the face of oppression.

I am asking you to strongly consider supporting the Standing Rock movement, even more than you already have.  During this Thanksgiving, Christmas time, Hanukkah, New Year, or perhaps it is just another Friday night, whatever you choose to celebrate, please, PLEASE keep in mind all of those who do not get to be with their families during these dark times.  Keep in your hearts those who perhaps do not have family to visit, or who don’t have the means to visit them.  Please remember that while you may still be out, having fun, drinking merrily, there are still people living in FEAR for their lives.

No doubt, this year has been difficult.  The following months may be even more challenging.  Guilt trips are a thing of the past, but reality checks are happening every day.  Bottom line, if you can’t give money, or can’t actually go to Standing Rock, there are other ways to help:

PICK UP THE PHONE.  Of course.  Call the North Dakota governor, Jack Dalrymple, and give him a piece of your mind (701-328-2200). Call the Morton County Sherriff’s department (701-328-8118) and the North Dakota National Guard at (701-333-2000 and tell them to stand down. Call the White House at (202-456-1111) or (202-456-1414) and tell president Obama to rescind the Army Corps of Engineers’ Permit for the Dakota Access Pipeline.   Call the executives of the companies that are building the Pipeline: Lee Hanse Executive Vice President Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. (201-403-6455; Glenn Emery Vice President Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. (202-403-6762); Michael (Cliff) Waters Lead Analyst Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. (713-989-2404).  Call the Army Corps of Engineers and demand that they reserve the permit: (202-761-5903).

Also, you can contact the 17 Banks Funding The Pipeline and withdraw your money!  Wells Fargo and U.S. Bank are two of the biggest.  “You vote with your wallet, your dollar bill is your ballot” –Wookiefoot

Some of you have already tried calling, and will find that often the mail boxes are FULL. (This is a good thing!)  So what else can we do?

The Protectors Alliance is a “unified platform and partnership effort of all signed organizations, skilled workers, producers and individuals from the global festival community.  They are working as a Alliance providing solutions in service to solidarity for front line environmental crisis and social justice conflicts.”   And chances are, you have a skill or tool that can help.

screen-shot-2016-11-21-at-11-54-59-pm

It’s getting colder.  Winterizations for the protectors is a key essential to the success of the action, and right now, you know that local organizations across the country are taking donations of blankets, warm coats, and even water proof scuba gear, etc.  Local firewood and food are also in high demand.

Please, consider becoming a conscious ally in this Indigenous movement and showing your support NOW, however that looks for you.

If all that you can do is share a video online to help perpetuate this movement, THEN THANK YOU.  Kevin Gilbertt is an excellent online live news source at Standing Rock to follow.  Digital Smoke Signals is another good resource. Unicorn Riot has been active as well.

Again, take a look at the Protectors Alliance website and see how YOU can get involved and be useful.  This is an opportunity of a lifetime, on so many levels, to make a difference for the better… for all of us.  I look at this as not just an opportunity to defend sacred water and land, but to set the standard for how we treat any an all indecencies, whether it be racism, classism, sexism, or environmentalism.

Remember, the next seven generations count on us.  It’s a group effort to enlightenment.  We will NOT sit by and watch these injustices continue to breed hate.  We WILL look this oppression in the eye and PEACEFULLY demand respect, for as long as it takes.

Last week I visited an old friend, and  we communed in our own version of prayer for the waters and fires that are disrupting any flow in this world. For that above and so below. For the waters inside our bodies and inside pipelines. A prayer for understanding and compassion, that if we can’t stop this “Black Snake”, that perhaps one day the pipes being built one day may be useful and carry clean water.  We release anger.  The days of crude oil are coming to an end. May the fires of destruction be a blessing of new growth. Earth, wind, fire and water. North, South, East and West. Together, we are powerful beyond belief.

Greener Pastures…

It looks so glamorous from the outside, but I promise you the struggle is real, no matter which side of the fence you live on.

I often look at my own progress as an artist and in terms of what it means to be “successful”…  I have to often remember that I am only one person, and I’ve come so much further than I ever expected, whilst undergoing the real struggle, to stay humble.   The irony of not being able to book a legit show in my hometown, but in florida they love me, I continue to try and make sense of it. But I am content.  I know I am worthy and was put here to make the world a more beautiful place as an artist. Nothing I have done was handed to me on a silver platter.

Logistics: My mother helped me financially record my first album in 2008. I self produced the 2nd and 3rd album and my fans helped with the costs of 4th album and book publishing.  I am my own manager, booking agent, PR creative director and social media marketer. Words came easy, but I’ve taught myself how to DJ, spin fire, market, update websites, and am now pushing myself out of my comfort zone to travel, teach workshops and street perform along the way.

None of this has been easy… But rewarding, yes. Worth every second of confusion and self doubt and mystery.

So use me universe. Don’t let my wanderings be in vain.

And may I always be grateful for those, friends, family and co-workers, who have believed in me all along the way, even when it was hard to believe in myself.  It is because of all of you that I can wake up everyday proud of my triumphs, and my mistakes. The lessons make all the mistakes worth it.

Oho from Montana,
MissChief

“WHAT do you WANT to be WHEN you grow UP?”

Growing up, I thought “I want to be a lawyer, OF COURSE” (it kind of  runs in my family… make Papa Sidney so proud).  Then it was a psychologist.  An art teacher or a dance instructor both sounded great.   After graduating from KU with a journalism degree, what did I want to be when I ‘grow’ up?

The only thing that really comes to mind, is ‘rapper’.  OK, how about artist…. that sounds a bit more professional.

Merely for the sake of shock value.  Partially because what other than upmost respect does one have for a serious emcee, but mostly, I strive to be a hip hop doo whoop hot shot because I LOVE delivering a message.  Sweetly.  Sincerely.  Shamelessly.

Messages, they come from everywhere if you read them right.  From our bodies. Our peers.  Our loved ones and our computer screens.  TVs and tree’s leaves all leave impressions upon our (collective) psyche.  Instincts rear their local heads and BAM.  We already KNEW it all as children (at least that’s what we thought).   Now when I think about how much we ACTUALLY do KNOW as a society…  it’s unfathomable.  Everyday, I feel like we as individuals and as a species are getting smarter.  We MUST be getting smarter, I mean look at all the mistakes that have been made…. we’ve got to be learning from them, right?

Exhibit A: Unpacking in my new living quarters this evening, at 27 years of age, it finally occurred to me the most beneficial way of organizing my stuff…. I have all these little containers and where to put each item simply came to me in this awesome system of organization that I’ve never seemed to notice before. I felt genius.  And at the same time astonished/embarrassed that it took me so dang long to discover what was just under my nose!

On a different note, every day I see some of the most creative, quirky and interesting interactions happening online.  And it really does make me proud, as much as I am ashamed of all the negativity and hatred (like the Nazi rally this Saturday, who’s idea was THat one?)  Evolution is taking place.

I am (generally) proud and excited to see us growing.  Individually.  Soundly.  Loudly.

I took the evening off tonight, instead of going to Luxury Bump or the Riot Room ….and after organizing, I choose to light some candles.  Turned down the lights…. Ran a bath and afterwards sat down on my bed indian style (is that politically in-correct?) and PRAYED.  For Blake Ephrim.  For myself.  For family.  It’s been a while.

And when you pray…. it get’s real real, folks.  I used to not understand it, or appreciate it.  Now I’m starting to see why people avoid it.   Prayer…. essentially comes out as if one is talking to one’s self.  A bit schitzo if you’re not sure what’s going on, but for real, I asked myself …. “Who am I grateful for, what needs help in this/my world, and what should I do about it, God?”  There. I said it.   The G word.  OOFF.  It almost gets stuck in my throat when I try and speak it aloud.  For one, God’s name is nameless, and for two, I’m still not sure what exactly it is I’m buying in to.

BUT it doesn’t matter if God or Spaghetti monsters are listening to begin with… we’re missing the whole point.  When I pray, I’M listening. And what was it that Ghandi like’s to say about being the change….

Image

There is no hiding in prayer.  You look yourself right in the eye and say hey, what the hell am I doing to be a part of the problem, and where does the solution lie?  Politics? Religion?  Imperialism?  (Art of Course.)

So I’m here.  PRESENT.  27 years old.  Indian style in front of my Brookside ‘shrine’ (which consists of photos of my father, gma, great gma on my dad’s side, a coral from my ma, some quartz crystals, an arrowhead, two sea shells, some sweet grass for burning, a vase and porcelain glass slipper.  Oh, and my teeth from when I was a baby in a little knitted jar… I mean where else do you keep something like that?).

Image

I’ve created my sacred space.  It’s time to look myself in the 3rd eye and ask the right questions… “What AM I doing with my life? Where AM I headed with my career?  What IS IT that I WANT TO BE when I grow up DAMNIT??? ” The question is age old…. and not getting any easier.

DON’T SELL OUT, whatever that means.

“I WON’T.”

While hard to define what my future holds, even with the tarot in hand, I DO know…. that I want to help people.  I want to sing.  I want to laugh and dance and cry.  I want to teach people how to love one another unconditionally.  I want to help people work through life and death experiences.  I want to hold you when you are broken and collect the pieces by your side.  I want to grow a community.  I know I want to use art and music and love to heal our wounds and create diverse understanding.  I want to help those who want to know more about what I see, to live more spiritually.  (W)holy.  A Sonic Temple.  I want to bring people together and create sacred space beneath the moonlight or by candlelight so that we may all truly see our own light and how brightly it might shine if we don’t fear the dark.  I want to work towards a world where we all feed each other and take care of our brothers and sisters.   I want to grow and serve organic GMO dinners for the whole world to nourish from.

“I AM truly blessed I know EXACTLY what I want to do with my life!”

And then the rationalist in me rebuttals, “How on earth do you get a degree in THAT?”

“Go to Rabbinical school,’ my Jewish mother suggests in her non-jewish tongue, “you’d be so goooood at teaching”.  But would not that be limiting myself to ONE denomination…. putting on blinders is not an option either.  I want to study it all.  Every God.  NO God.  God as a verb.

So where do you even begin to gain credibility, let alone a paycheck, based on such the abstract concepts of love and peace and art.  “It should be so easy”.  God would know what to do.

Is Miley Cyrus the wrecking ball that God had in mind when he gave us free will?  Is that as far as our evolution has taken us, publicly? Or maybe Miley really was just going for shock value….and  I wonder if she got to be what she wanted to when she ‘grew up’.

I’ll suppose I shall wait my turn patiently…. continue reading the signs and hope I don’t miss my cue.  Stage left.  This is show business.   And I truly am loving every minute of growing up.

Meanwhile, if you believe in what I do, please continue to donate to my Indigogo Campaign. You’re buying me some time.  I really do appreciate it.
